Did you know female dogs can get mammary tumors (aka breast cancer), and also get what is called a pyometra where their uterus fills up with puss and eventually ruptures and kills the dog? Do you know what can keep these two things from happening to your dog? SPAYING them! Spaying your female pooch not only prevents unnecessary puppies from being born, but it keeps your dog HEALTHY. The average surgery to have a mammary mass removed is $900+. The average emergency spay/pyometra surgery is $1,500.+ The average spay is between $300 - $500, and usually LESS if you get your dog fixed before their first heat. Many animal hospitals now hold LOW COST spay and neuter days for puppies who have yet to go into their first heat cycle. Many local humane societies do the same. So be smart and save you and your dog the grief of these disastrous outcomes from not being spayed.

Friends - Shadow’s Fund needs your help. Our medical fund took a serious blow these last several weeks. It seems that every dog we rescued needed major medical attention. Beginning with Fiona ( the little female pit found hanging from her paw by a fence), to Teddy (our big sweet guy who was shot and had a shattered hip) and Bernard (the sweet senior pit that lived most of his life on the streets with a homeless man and incurred skin cancer on his belly) … Earlier this year we had Rosie (the pup with the broken elbow) Coda (a stray found hit by a car that needed medical attention to save his life) and Ellie (the saggy baggy girl who had such a severe skin infection that she had lost all of her hair). In addition to those, there is Journey, Chula and Louie - dogs that needed some extra socialization help from professional trainers and sweet Skylar who’s owner passed away and left her alone in the world. Without space here or a home, we’ve been paying to board her. These last weeks have brought over $15,000 in medical bills alone. We need to raise at least $6000 to cover just our current medical costs and there are still surgeries and physical therapy appointments to come. We know everyone is strapped but this is a big community. If everyone on this page made a small contribution and shared it with friends we could hit that goal in no time. Please help. We won’t turn our back on a dog just because saving their life is going to cost money and take a little effort. Our unspoken promise to them is to give them their best chance for a happy life. Please help us keep that promise by making a donation and sharing with friends. Thank you. This is a photo of Teddy. Teddy was shot, suffered a shattered hip, was abandoned and almost killed in a shelter. He is now recovering from surgery and taking naps on a cozy couch with his foster mom because people like you care.

This is what Bernard is doing right this moment.. sleeping with my little girl, not even knowing that he’s sick. We got back Bernard’s biopsy results today, and it isn’t good. We are dealing with a “invasive and destructive” skin cancer, and so the fight to battle it is going to be a big one.
The diagnostics and dental care that Bernard has needed in just the two weeks since Shadow’s Fund has had him is already almost $1500.00, and the surgery and further diagnostic he needs is just going to increase that amount by leaps and bounds. If you can DONATE any amount towards his care, please please do. He is deserving of having a chance to live a full life, and Shadow’s Fund is going to give him that chance. You can donate by going to www.shadowsfund.org

This is Bernard. Shadow’s Fund contacted their group of volunteers looking for a foster, after they received news from a local shelter that this boy was on the euth list for THAT DAY. I immediately replied saying I could foster, and when nobody else offered to take him I was called to go pick him up and bring him home to my pack. I got him literally 30 minutes before he was to be PTS.

The B-man is 7-years-old and belonged to a homeless man who was put into a situation where he could no longer keep his dog. Shadow’s Fund learned the day following his rescue what toll living on the streets had taken on Bernard; he was taken in for a check-up because he had large sores on his belly. We learned that more than likely those sores were actually tumors, and Bernard had skin cancer from too much sun exposure.

This past Friday Bernard had three biopsies taken from each large lesion on his abdomen, as well as oral surgery to remove his upper canines that were completely fractured. Pending what the biopsies say the future treatment of Bernard’s cancer will be determined.

Currently Bernard is not up for adoption as we wait to hear what his medical prognosis is. But I can say as his foster, he has been a wonderful dog to have in our home.

To assist with all of Bernard’s medical treatments and care, please go to www.shadowsfund.org and donate.

Teddy was rescued from the Shafter shelter last Sunday to save his life. He was scheduled for euthanasia on Monday. We were shocked to learn that the limp in his hind leg was because Teddy had been shot and was still carrying a large bullet that had totally dislocated his hip. He will have surgery next week at UC Davis to remove the bullet and repair his hip. Now we need to find a loving home for this big fella. He is going to need some R&R after his surgery but should recover just fine and be ready to play in no time. Teddy is big sweet heart, great with kids and little dogs. He is guarded around large dogs which may be due to his injury. Contact Shadow’s Fund to learn more or to meet Teddy: info@shadowsfund.org - or go to our website to donate to his care: www.shadowsfund.org

This is Fifi (or Fiona). She is a 4 - 5 year old blue nosed Pittie, who was seized from someone’s house after she was found with her foot stuck in a fence for four days. Yes, for four days her foot was caught in a fence and her owner allowed her to stay that way, until a utility worker saw her and called Animal Services. Fifi was seized along with one other dog, a Lhasa Apso mix who was basically a walking dreadlock. It was obvious neither dog was a priority or given love and attention like they deserved. Fiona was caked in dirt and it’s obvious she has had several litters of puppies.

Fiona was shared on Facebook by Shadow’s Fund as they reached out for a foster to step up. Her story of hanging from a fence by her leg touched so many people, that eventually the local media got involved in their attempt to find her a foster home. As of yesterday Fifi and her little housemate, Micky, were officially signed over to Shadow’s Fund and thanks to so much networking they have a foster eagerly anticipating their arrival and they plan to adopt both dogs.

Micky got the easy end of the deal. After being shaved down he was neutered, and he’s a energetic and happy little dog.

Fiona on the other hand has not done so well. After the swelling of her leg went down it was found that one of her tendons was completely severed, and other tendons were exposed. It’s still questionable if whether or not her leg is even savable because of potential nerve damage. While sweet she has gone through bouts of being depressed and withdrawn, and sometimes needs to coaxing to eat. She wants love and soaks in every bit she gets, but it obvious she is fighting an internal battle. To help her get through her depression both Fifi and Micky are temporarily at my home, so they get constant attention.

If you would like to donate to Fiona’s care, please go to: www.shadowsfund.org
